Gotye - “I Feel Better”
From the opening horns, this song sounds like it should front a variety show broadcast from the 60s, replete with back up singers clicking their fingers and shrugging their shoulders in sync. And both the things I love most about Wally De Backer’s music - his incredible voice and his percussive sensibilities - are front and centre.
But aside from all his musicality and respect for music’s lineage, “I Feel Better” got one of my ten Hottest 100 votes because it’s just so satisfying to sing along with. I had the pleasure of seeing Gotye perform live on three occasions in 2011, and twice he performed this song. In the midst of a rough year, I couldn’t put a price on the experience of singing “I feel better, better, better than before, I feel better, much better, now I’m not down anymore” at the very top of my lungs, expelling negativity with every breath, surrounded by a sea of others doing the exact same thing.
